The Game Rating & Administration Committee was established by the South Korean government in 2006 (known then as the Game Rating Board) solely for the classification of software. Prior to this, the Korea Media Rating Board (responsible for movie, video, stage performance and phonograme classification) applied classifications to software until controversy arose following the classification decision they made on a gambling game. It was then that the Game Rating Board was established and took control of software classifications. It was renamed Game Rating & Administration Committee in 2013.
