Date launched as a software classification system: 1986

The British Board of Film Classification started applying its film classifications to software in the United Kingdom as early as 1986, but only where necessary. All other software was considered to be exempt from classification. With the introduction of the Digital Economy Act 2010, the Pan European Game Information (PEGI) system started being applied to software in the UK (handled by the Video Standards Council), though the PEGI marks had started appearing on software sold in the UK as early as 2003 when that system was adopted elsewhere in Europe, and it wasn't until 30th July 2012 that the PEGI system became legally enforceable in the UK. The BBFC was no longer required to oversee the classification of software at this time; however, if software contains strong pornographic material or is contained on the same media that contains video of this nature, the BBFC is still required to apply its own R18 classification.
The BBFC's PG and UC classifications found on video releases were not applied to video games. The 12A classification found in cinemas was also not applied to video games.
