In Australia, censorship classifications are applied to games by the Classification Board (formerly the Office of Film and Literature Classification). Classification of software commenced as early as 1994 and was incorporated into the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995.
On 26th May 2005, the software classification system changed slightly to bring it in line with film classifications. This resulted in the G8+ classification being replaced with the PG classification and the same classification symbols being applied to games as is to films. However, the R18+ and X18+ film classification were not applied to games during this change.
On 1st January, 2013, the R18+ classification started being applied to games after much public lobbying. Software that, in the past, may have been refused classification or censored to conform to an MA15+ classification could now potentially be given an R18+ classification.
