Sega VR

Console Information

The Sega VR is a virtual reality game system that is mounted on the head to immerse the player in a video game environment. Sega and Ideo worked together on the unit. Ideo was responsible for the industrial design while Sega developed the mechanical and electronic design. The system was made up of two LCD screens for the video display and headphones for the sound. The internal sensor could sense the player's movements and display movement accordingly as if the player was really in the virtual world.

Working prototypes of the Sega VR were made, but due to safety concerns, it was never sold. The immersion was so realistic that Sega feared children might run while using the headset and injure themselves.
