Infinium Labs Phantom

Console Information

After a number of delays and design changes (see original concept here), the Phantom was eventually released, being the first product from Florida-based company, Infinium Labs. The company claims to be made up of industry veterans with experience in building large companies. The console is said to be able to outperform the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Game Cube with its high-speed processor, broader range of games and online broadband connectivity.

The system does not take DVDs, CDs or cartridges. Instead, games are downloaded via a broadband Internet connection. This opens up a whole new world of opportunities for gamers such as the ability to:

• Instantly buy games over the Internet
• Download free demos before buying
• Rent games simply by downloading them for a set period
• Play against other Phantom or PC owners around the world (The Phantom is said to be compatible with PC games too)
• Upgrade system/games seemlessly

Plus, there's more opportunity for game developers to make their work available as they can avoid the process of publishing and distributing games.
