Australia

In Australia, censorship classifications are applied to games by the Australian Board of Film and Literature Classification <link to page within site - companies-organisations>. The Australian classifications are:

General

Suitable for all ages.

General 8+

Recommended for persons 8 years and over.

Mature 15+

Recommended for persons 15 years and over.

Mature 15+ Restricted

Restricted to persons 15 years and over.

RC

Refused Classification

Due to explicit material the game is not for sale in Australia, thus has been refused classification.

USA

Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB). The ESRB classifications are:

Early Childhood

Suitable for persons 3 years and over.

Everyone

Suitable for persons 6 years and over.

Kids To Adults

Suitable for persons 6 years and over.

Teen

Suitable for persons 13 years and over.

Mature

Suitable for persons 17 years and over.

Adults Only

Not suitable for persons under 18 years.

Rating Pending

Product has been submitted to the ESRB and is awaiting final rating.

Europe

Great Britain

In Great Britain, censorship classifications are applied to games by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The BBFC classifications are:

Universal

Suitable for all ages.

12+

Recommended for persons 12 years and over.

15+

Recommended for persons 15 years and over.

18+

Restricted to persons 18 years and over.

France

In France, censorship classifications are applied to games by Syndicat des Editeurs de Logicels de Loisir (SELL) (Union of Editors of Leisure Software). The SELL classifications are:

Suitable for all ages.

Déconseillé Aux Moins De 12 Ans

Recommended for persons 12 years and over.

Public Adulte Déconseillé Aux Moins De 16 Ans

Recommended for persons 16 years and over.

Interdit Aux Moins De 18 Ans

Restricted to persons 18 years and over.

Germany

In Germany, censorship classifications are applied to games by UnterhaltungssoftwareSelbstKontrolle (USK) (The Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body). The USK classifications are:

Geeignet Ohne Altersbeschränkung

No age restriction.

Geeignet Ab 6 Jahren

Suitable for persons 6 years and over.

Geeignet Ab 12 Jahren

Suitable for persons 12 years and over.

Geeignet Ab 16 Jahren

Suitable for persons 16 years and over.

Nicht Geeignet Unter 18 Jahren

Not suitable for persons under 18 years.

Sega Videogame Rating Council (VRC)

VRC classifications were applied only to Sega games in the mid-1990s before the above classification bodies were firmly in place. The two VRC classifications are:
